Photo-0108Last week I was a bit absent from the blog.  This is because I was trimming the fat off of my business!  I know that sounds funny but it is what I was doing.  I have been spreading myself way too thin on everything I have been doing.  I guess that comes with being a mother, okay, maybe not.  Maybe it comes from being a type A personality!  Where ever it comes from I did it!

Too many blogs!

Up until last week I had four blogs and probably about ten websites.  I still do have all of them but I am not going to actively blog and update these sites!  I am finally doing what I really love!  I started a website on genealogy/family history.  It is called Start Your Family History.  This is where my main focus will lie!  Genealogy has been my passion for a very long time and I want to focus on helping others get started!  It can be quite overwhelming to figure out things on your own.

So in addition to affiliate marketing I am going to become an information product developer!  I am going to be selling the content that I create.  I have a long way to go on this project but it will happen!  I am really excited about this!

Focus your business!

It is really important to focus your business.  I know I have talked about this before but I am always needing more focus.  So what can you cut out of your business.  If you can’t cut things out can you outsource those jobs to someone else?  What I would challenge you to do is really take a good look at your business!  What can you do to have more success?

Yours,

PS. The catalyst of this change was going through Problogger’s 31 days to building a better blog.  It is a great ebook!

  • This is an area I’ve struggled with too. Realizing that my attention is just spread to thin, and I’m not able to really give my projects as much time as they need. Glad to hear you are refining your focus as well!

    • Thanks Shannon! I new this change needed to happen but I put it off. It was so scary when I made the decision but now I feel really good! I feel really relieved!

  • Totally nodding my head over here. I did a lot of this trimming over the past year. I had about 32 websites, and now I have less than 10. Big changes, lots of focus, making more money and feeling a lot better about the direction I’m headed! I hope your fat trimming is good stuff and looking forward to hearing about your progress some more.

    • Wow 32 websites!! I don’t know how you handled it all! I totally understand how you can end up with that many. I was definitely headed there. I know you are doing great things with your business. I will keep you posted on how things go!

  • Hi Daniellle,

I’ve had a similar experience recently. I’ve tried to wear too many hats: twitter, running two blogs, writing guest posts, visiting blogs, etc. I’ve cut the fat by focusing on twitter during the day and then I unplug in the early evening. I might write a few posts but I’m offline. No dawdling around trying to do 6 things at once.

Focus gives you clarity, and clarity gives you power.

    • Ryan,

That is a great idea! I do end up unplugging but I have a service business as well and I end up doing that with the computer off!

  • Congrats on your smart business decisions!

Ever since I started to focus on one niche I have had great success. I still struggle with organization and timing of my online work but I’m getting there. I would like to see myself outsource some things that I’m not too excited about doing in my business.

I’m currently following the 31 Days to a better blog ebook too and it has really taught me quite a bit.

I would ultimately like to unplug at night and just hang out.
