Memorial Day & The Cemetery

So just like I said in my Miracle Monday post we went to the cemetery. Our family loves to go to cemeteries. I know some people will think that is morbid but we love it. Some of the reasons we love the cemetery is because it is so peaceful and quiet. It is a great place to exercise. It is also just a great place to be alone with your thought. I am sure my love of cemeteries also stems from my love of genealogy/family history. The headstone represent real people to me that have lived lives. Their lives may have short, long, happy or sad. They may have accomplished a lot or very little. This doesn’t matter at all! All that matters is they lived!
We have never lived close to a cemetery that family is buried in. Growing up I lived in Washington state. My dad is from Idaho and mom is from England. So in the little town I grew up in there wasn’t any family buried there. When my husband and I moved to Ohio my kids learned to love cemeteries because I would go exercise there. There was a small Catholic cemetery that was about a half mile from the house and there was a big beautiful city cemetery. I will never forget being overdue with my second daughter and walking the rolling hills of the city cemetery. This cemetery was a mixture of very old and new. It had a few ponds, some ducks and geese and fountains. The best part of the cemetery were the great big trees. Last spring we even went for one last walk there (I was pregnant again) before we moved.
We now live in Utah where we have family here and a large heritage! So there was no way Memorial Day was going to come and go without us visiting our family in the cemetery! We started our trek about thirty minutes from home to get to this cemetery. When we got there I was shocked. There were so many people there! I have never been to a cemetery on Memorial Day so maybe this is the norm. There were actually large families gathered in different places in the cemetery! It looked like they were having parties. It felt so odd because it wasn’t so quite today! It was so neat though to see people appreciating those that have gone on before us! There were also flowers everywhere! Even on some of the graves that we visited!
I am glad crowds don’t come to the cemetery every day but I am sure glad that people are celebrating those who came before us!
